Glue 2 of your inserts to your base, cut the appropriate holes in your lower fibreglass/carbon layer to let the insert through. Your inserts now guarantee your alignment.

Many thanks for the calculations Mattman. To mattman and others what size test pannels should I make up to test the theories and claims of the material? I was personally thinking 60cm long (10 cm to clamp 50cm to bend) 5 cm wide 4mm or 5 mm thick core laminated on both sides. No sidewalls or base or...

I used a bit of a hair-brained technique for the two pairs I'm doing now, and it worked amazing... I'm now convinced a drum sander would be the #1 best way to profile a core. I used my planer to cut the cores down just enough that it was making a cutting pass from tip to tail - in other words the p...

I am going to do some mechanical tests before I commit to building a ski When I started down the hemp route I built some ski core sections and did bending and twisting tests to compare the different weaves to glass. In a ski I was under the impression that most of the time the glass, carbon etc is f...

I would be happy to run those numbers for you...just need a little clerification first: Is the 31.5 GPa modulus the fiber modulus? I will have to write a new product ID into my program for 400g/360g triax. With this you would like to know how to change the core thickness to compensate (in stiffness...

About 1/2 kg of resin per pair with 750 gsm (22oz) glass

180 skis 100mm underfoot - 50% more if I'm sloppy

Core thickness to compensate for re-enforcement change

I about to experiment with some industrial flax to replace fibreglass - I'm not very good at Mechanical math - mattman or others can you help again. (I've already gone from 650gsm to 750gsm glass witht the help of mattman) Ski Length 180cm Core length 1550 (20cm tip 5cm tail) Core thickness 2.5mm,11...

I would go for a pine core, with fibreglass layup, press in a vacuum bag - simplest way to go.

The dimensions you have will work but depending on the weight of glass will be reasonably stiff.

I would go with 600gsm glass in triax (or uni +45 biax depwnding on what you can get)

Re: Autoclaves

This is awsome! I hereby set up an award for $5 for the first one to build their own autoclave for skibuilding :D Or you can buy this one, it's called Econoclave so I'm sure it's cheap or "affordable" as they say. It's even "turnkey", piece of cake... http://www.aschome.com/Comp...

Use a vacuum setup, needs nothing you can't hide in a ski bag. I first built skis in the corridor of the 2 bed apartment I lived in - did all the woodworking on the balcony! skied em for 100's of days OK now I rent 45sqm and use a 40psi heated two ski press - but now I'm looking to press 100+ pairs ...

Not really, depending on your stone it will be like 300 or 800 grit belt.

I use a 60 grit belt to flatten bases - 100 grit would take 10x longer
