Just checking, you are wearing gloves - stupid question I know, but I've seen it done. Also mask - respirator style not white dust mask? I suffer from hypersensitivity from too much resin exposure myself - a few drops anywhere on my hands and my fingers (on both hands) swell and blister like a radia...

The base always sits under the edge tangs/fingers, all the way to the skiable (visible bit) edge. They just missed the step of putting the vds over the edges - this is the "black layer" you are seeing - it is just sitting on top of the edges, it's generally wider than the edges and sticks ...

Interesting stuff. How does the weight compare to FG? How does the flax compare in cost to FG? Weight of the flax is best explained here http://bcomp.ch/files/amplitex-noncrimp_5008_5009_5309_english_web.pdf Cost, compared to aero grade glass http://shop.r-g.de/en/Glass/Non-crimp-fabric-NCF/ it's e...

If you measure some dry flax you should be able to get a pretty good volume fraction estimate (which has a dramatic effect on strength)...I think one of the sources you referenced mentioned the flax being more difficult to achieve high volume fractions. I'll be very interested to see what propertie...

Flax - Fiberglass replacement

I am building some experimental skis using Flax to replace the fibreglass. It is industrial flax specifically designed to replace fibreglass in structural applications. The flax http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8148/7690218054_c123d8d751_b.jpg It looks like and apart from the surface feel, feels like a...

i typically go from 10-12 mm in the middle to about 4-6mm on the tails and 4-6mm on the tip. the reason this works for me is that i am making rocker tip flat camber skis, a so the ski doesn't need to flex very much because it is already in the correct shape to shred the pow. at 4mm they have a lot ...

legon22, search for Davide's build log (sorry I'm too lazy to look it up) and all will be reviled. I have made many skis with refrigerator compressors, they work fine - shut off valves and vacuum reservoirs (see joe woodworker) help. Cheap bleeder cloth is called cardboard ;) My early vacuum bags co...

If you are heading over to France to climb Mont Blanc,

Give me a shout - and a heads up before hand. I live at the foot of Mont Blanc. I am more than happy to show you how we make skis at Idris Skis
