Re: First pair of skis!!

Hi, if its only hairy its only the roughness of the belt. Overheating during grinding causes small melted round or rectangular parts in addition to the hairs (about 0.5mm max size I'd guess, haven't seen it in a while). They are not easy to spot. If your base is black, it also tends to turn a bit gr...

Re: First pair of skis!!

Hello, having worked in a ski service for 2 seasons, I can definitely say that using a normal hand belt grinder to grind the base is a bad idea. I will try to point out the most important issues with that: No cooling. Professional grinders have a decent water cooling to prevent the base from overhea...

Re: Round Top skis 19/20

I always have the 0.6mm rabbet already in the bottom side when going in the planer. I use this rabbet and add some double sided tape (I add some paper in between to get to 0.6mm thickness) at the tip and tail sections. This keeps the sidewalls in place and keeps them from shattering. The other thing...

Re: Round Top skis 19/20

Yes, a small recess for the thumbtack head is neccessary of course. I make this utterly simple: I take a 10mm wood drill but run it turning left (the way you would turn a screw out) so it does not really drill but just "smear" the wood of a bit.

Re: Acrylic painted artwork Q

Good to know. Do you have any experience regarding the robustness of this 2K spray coat? Seems like a product easy to get in Germany and I am not satisfied with my current 1K PU clear coat. Also applying it by rolling always leaves some dirt in the coat, spraying could be the way to go.

Re: Round Top skis 19/20

Hi, regarding core shift during layout/pressing. My method to avoid this is as follows: I use 3 thumbtacks glued to the base to keep the core in position during layup. the core then can't move more than about 0.2mm without getting resistance from the thumbtacks. Maybe this can help you to avoid that...

Well, we will see how good they hold up with that layup. So far they only made about 5000 vertical meters but already took some hard riding and bending. So far, everything is fine.

Re: New very light Touring Ski: 1990g per pair

Hi, finally some more pics. After the 6th day on snow I am very very happy with these skis. Balsa cores really ski well. And flax/carbon is great, anyone who skied that combination will agree I guess. p.s.: I really love the look of the white sidewalls. I take the trouble of cutting normal sidewall ...

New very light Touring Ski: 1990g per pair

Hello, I wanted to try balsa cores for long. This winter I finally made it. So far it seems to be a big success, as the ski is very light and skis well. Some Data: 175cm 119-83-106 1990g/Pair (of course the skis only, without binding) Sidewalls (2.5mm thick) Real ski end Hollow Tip to save weight Co...

Re: 3d Base questions

Keep in mind that hardly any ski service will be able to handle 3d bases properly. You definitely will need to search for someone capable handling this, as all machines are made to grind as flat as possible.

Re: Pre-treating paulownia or balsa core

Thanks for all the feedback, will go without pre-treating. Another question came up: How much extra resin did you put on the fabric to get a sufficient bond with the balsa? I calculated that a layer of fabric (one below core, one above) will take up 85g of resin. I would add 25g = 110g per layer to ...

Re: Low Density Sidewalls

Hi, my solution is to only have 2.5-3mm thick sidewalls. This adds little weight but offers nearly all benefits of a sidewall. The only possible issue is that on a hard impact on the edge, there is less sidewall to take that impact. But a hard impact with constant edge deformation always is a bad da...
