Re: Splitboard "tounge and groove" concept
Very happy you posted this here. I saw some chatter on the fb group and its just not a great place to get into it. The idea is neat. The sharpening piece is interesting. There are people out there rocking DIY splits without the inner edge at all. Its not ideal but enough for me to pause and take a s...

Re: Jonrezz’s Build Log
I did read on another thread a while ago about unpredictable camber with one sided heat. My thought here was try a ramp/soak controller and program a gradual temp profile instead of just blasting the heat full throttle up to setpoint, hopefully reducing the unevenness. if my little experiment fails...

Re: First Board!
I usually prepare multiple cups with resin and hardener, but just don't mix yet. then whenever you're ready you can just stir and use without getting the scale all messy... I weigh out 5-6 solo cups (100-200g depending on the size of the board) of resin. Then I zero the scale with an empty cup, put...

Re: Polyester fleece or fleecing a carbon fiber ski
One issue I have is a constant delamination in a single tip of one ski. I hit jumps on ice, so the tip flexes and sheers under the stress. I don't wish to rivet so I was hoping that I could sand and put a piece of polyester in the tip to improve it's chances of not sheering. Do you have pictures of...

Re: Wooden backcountry skis
Cool! If you like to go lightweight switch to full carbon fibres. You will have to make the core thinner as well (if you stay with ash) which will also shave off some weight... But ... if your skis are not made mainly for freeride or high speed you can change to another more lightweight wood. This ...

Re: The Culling -- inactive user cleanup is coming March 2019
Phew-- thanks for not purging me! Not sure how i made it through the culling! Semi related, but should we maybe also then limit to what you can see what you log in? Maybe lock build journals, apres ski, and the classifieds to users only? Wondering if this would help increase participation to the for...

Re: Wooden backcountry skis
This is a really neat process. The wooden base (and hot bending of), the rod tensioned press, and the DIY tools (bandsaw, belt sander), and general use of hand tools stand out as pretty unique and clever. Looks like a well thought out process all in all Have you ridden them? How do they ride? Any is...

What's the state of our community right now?
Curious-What's new and happening in the community right now? I am really out of touch... Its been a few years since I've been on here. At first glance, the forum seems less active, there are a few people using the #skibuilders tag on IG, and there's this FB group that's large really just a mess. A l...

Re: Full Cap Issues
Yes, as sticky sections of howtos would help a lot. Otherwise it will become facebookish here ... ask before search ;) I almost answered a technical question on the facebook snowboardbuilders group today... then i thought.. naw... this is a pain. They can do their homework, think, and then come fin...

Re: Acrylic painted artwork Q
I emailed Montana a few questions-- Took a week or so but got a nice thoughtful answer from a tech. WRT to using acrylic paint-- they suggested an acrylic rattle can primer coat: https://www.montanacolors.com/en/productos/pro-matt-white-base-primer/ Their hardcore acrylic lineup: https://www.montana...

Re: Full Cap Issues
Also when you talk about a blank do you mean making the core/sidewall part bigger than the base/edge width so there is room to trim down? Yes, you glue the sidewall to the core and some wood outside to the sidewall. The outside wood just acts as a spacer, so take whatever you have laying around and...

Re: Full Cap Issues
Yup no sidewall just the fiberglass and veneer protecting the ski. my only hesitation would be sidewall material from crown is $160 (which yeah comes with a bit of material) but its a little steep for right now (i need to buy more expoxy and edge stock first). I also noticed in my last ski the cap ...

Re: Honeycomb core/Prepreg Film
One other thing has been bothering me on this approach--
If the wet layup is up against a honey comb or even something that has some compliance, you're going to have less squeeze out since you won't have even force over all of the glass. Might be part of why prepreg works well with honeycomb.

Re: Core tapering with hand power tools?
Yep.Let me try to give you some keywords so you can do homework... Search "router sled" -- some plywood and a router and you can be up and profiling in an hour. Can also adapt to a power plane. Basically you can take a sheet of mdf, cut some rails and glue/screw them to the sides, then mak...
