Re: Blackmore

yeah we use a vacuum press, with my rabbit but I have right now it couldn't extend over the pine plus the sidewall but if you think it will get cut off with the flash I can make the pine strip smaller and maybe to get it to reach.

Re: Blackmore

Youre on the right way. Yes you should do your sidewalls wider then your outline, it will be cut away later. Do a safe margin depending how exact your core positioning system is. My positioning system isn't the most accurate so I think I am going to offset the core outline 3mm on each side and have...

Re: Blackmore

Well making a ski with a sidewall for the first time has come with its own set of lessons. I made the sidewalls to line up with the edge profile seems like my core profile and base profile got slightly off when making my templates, not surprising really as working with a jigsaw and router is not goi...

Re: Blackmore

Well, it is time for me to start messing with materials and such in my design. I bought some vectorply 23.55oz triax FG, I want to see if I can feel a difference. The only issue is that I am going to also add sidewalls to this next set due to the cap issues I have been having. I got hard maple for t...

Re: Full Cap Issues

So from my understanding is that for wood sidewalls you cut stringers from an ash plank and then attach it with poly glue, adding an additional stringer to the outside of a sidewall to protect the sidewalls .

Re: Full Cap Issues

Thanks for all the info, I will definitely look into wood sidewalls as a backup option to the PTEX. Monkey Wiki always makes me wish I had a better shop space and a CNC.

Re: Full Cap Issues

Hmm, imho cap is much more complicated and more prone to fail then proper sidewalls. The most "difficult" thing with sidewalls is to find a router with tilt base or an angled bit. Where is the difference with needed material? Or are you just using a core without sidewall at all to do your...

Re: Full Cap Issues

Mammuth, honestly I went with cap because it was cheaper and easier as I have just started into all this. I think sidewalls or hybrid are by far better but it seemed like one less thing to buy and figure out at the time haha.

Thelongride wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 2:23 pm I assume you're vacuum bagging? It's simply the vac doesn't pull hard enough to get a full wrap cap.

Going full sidewall (sandwich) or partial sidewall should solve this issue
Yeah its done with a vacuum bagging, I might need to look into how to do sidewalls then.

Full Cap Issues

I have had this problem in both the pairs of skis I have made where my cap has separation in the side, basically the top layer of fiberglass and veneer isn't meeting up with the lower part and leaves an opening, ill attach a pic to show it better as im bad with words. Does anyone have an idea how to...

Re: First Board!

The Board looks sick! i also had to get creative in my last layup with my bag ripping. What kind of rice paper did you use for your graphics? The one I used seemed to be pretty thick and left a very clear ghosting (we figured it would happen and worked with it) but i want to try to get some more cle...

Re: Blackmore

Some additional comments to the last update: I think everything came out great and im super happy with the look of the skis, it will be fun to ride them in the coming months. Still had some sidewall separation but i filled in with some more epoxy on the sides to try to seal the core for longer. i th...

Re: Blackmore

This a bit of an overdue update but I have now finished up my second pair of skis. On this pair I focused on improving my process and set up. To start I got the tip of my cassette bent up to get more of a shovel tip as the first pair was more of a linear rise from the contact point to the terminatio...

Re: Blackmore

Just curious, how accurate did you get your core profile with that planer jig? I'm using a different set up with adjustable shims to create the spacing and not getting super accurate with the thickness. I think I'm within reason, but will try to get better. Possibly a more rigid setup like you have...

Those are looking pretty good! I do a similar method with the aluminum cassette and was wondering how your rocker camber profile turned out. On mine im still not getting as much camber as i would like so im working on that in my process.
