Site Updates -- Big THANKS to Head Monkey!!

Hi Everyone, As you can see, the entire site has been updated. The service provider recently upgrade their PHP and factoring in that the old platform was outdated, it all created a little bit of a mess, but we needed to update things anyway. A HUGE thanks to Head Monkey for stepping in and taking th...

@Richuk -- Yes, I've vacuum pressed skis before, but I don't understand what you mean and how it would solve the issue of alignment with the core and the topsheet. Can you explain? Thanks!

Some words: spec out your beams carefully and do the calcs for the cage or whatever you are surrounding your beams with. The cage will carry the load, and the load will be transferred to the bolts, etc., so if you don't connect things properly, bad things can happen. I've sheared a handful of bolts ...

@ MontuckyMadman -- yes, yes, I know I know...that CNC is nice and precise. I tune it like I tune my bike every few weeks and wax the o-rings on the sealed bearings. I wish I had more time in the day to dig thoroughly through this form..... Anyway, I haven't found a good way to line things up other ...

Wow, there's no snow at the Meiss Cabin! I was there last spring and laid on my back to enjoy lunch on the roof, just where the pipe is coming out of the wall! I can't believe it's so dry here!!

@ telehead -- core is approximately 11 mm (0.433") underfoot; the shadows in the photo makes it look thicker than it is. The first and second pair I made were 12.5 mm (~0.5") underfoot. If the skis were for me I'd go with 176 cm, but the request was for 170 light touring skis, so 170 it is...

@Richuk -- yes, I know Ski Trab, but which ski are you talking about, because when I last checked the skis in the 700-800 gram range were not that wide, about 96 mm at the shovel and 64 mm at the waist? http://skitrab.com/en-us/c-5-ultra-light/1-race-areo-world-cup.html Here's something that's compa...

@OAC > "1.99 lbs(~900g)...I'm on! (The breaking might be an issue...)" Nice! Now the fun begins. But I think we should set some rules, guidelines, etc, because like I said, weight is not the challenge because one can hit that target, say use balsa wood and leave out sidewalls and use paper...

An ultralight (K skis by the Ski Lab)

I'd like to share some new work. This past spring while ski touring with some good friends in the high Sierras, the idea of building a light ski came up. You see, some of my friends will not ski on my skis simply because they are not light enough. Whatever. But being an avid backcountry skier myself...

I've used purple heart in about 10 pairs of skis now, and it seems to be a hit or miss. Sometimes the color turn out; other times it's what you described. I didn't really think much about the cause, though....

I use both a bandsaw and jigsaw. MontuckyMadman is right, the 10 tpi works well. For the jigsaw, I can get one pair of skis using just one Bosch 118B blade (14-Tooth). The trick of course for longer life is to try to keep the blade cool.

Nice work, Doug!

I like how they turned out. So, are you using a clear topsheet?

Kublai ski press with new lowering top mold assembly

Hi Everybody! First, happy Thanksgiving holiday! I made a modification to my ski press (named Kublai) that I'd like to share. You might find it useful. I did not do an exhaustive search through this forum to see if anybody else has done this exact design, so I apologize if this is a repeat. Anyway, ...
