Hmm - that's exactly what I was going to try Chris-grr. I have seen them do something like that in the J Skis vid so I will keep trying.

digital printing

Does anybody have any experience of UV digitally printing topsheets. I am planning on using ICP 2117 000 (= transparent ABS- TPU top sheet). Before printing do I have to prime the surface (if so what with) or can I just an it through the printer? Am getting some confused messages from the manufactur...

Thanks for the replies - hmm, seems there's no real consensus. I shall try both and see what happens.

Lay up sequence - carbon next to wood

Hello everyone I seem to remember that someone told me that in a lay up, it is best to have the FG next to the core rather than the CF - something to do with differential expansion and contraction rates between the wood and CF? Am I right in thinking this, and does putting the CF next to the core ma...

I've done all sorts of shit things - bases the wrong way round in the mould, polishing through the veneer, slipping with the router, getting the angle of the router wrong (so there is virtually no ski left) and best of all leaving what looked like a set of keys under the veneer when pressing - I sti...

thanks all - I think that a bit of gorilla tape in the right place may be the answer.

Still scorchio in the UK, out of the world cup and I have a ton of work to do.........on the plus side I have a week's fishing in Ireland coming up. Happy days.

The finish looks really great Gav - what's your recipe on veneer? I use a 3 coat wet epoxy on wet epoxy. I then polish it using various grades of wet and dry. I get an absolute mirror finish. I tend to make skis, and the problem I have is that they chip very badly - any views?

Tip spacer attachement

Hello everyone - I am becoming very frustrated with my inability to ensure that the tip spacer doesn't move during pressing. 4 out of 5 times everything goes well and the junction between the core and space is spot on and then something moves and although it doesn't ruin the ski is annoys the heck o...

Top sheet alternative

Hello everyone - I am making a pair of skis for someone for Christmas and have realised that I have no clear topsheet left and can't get any in time

Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative - I don't want to go down the veneer route.

Thanks

Interesting thread - I use only vacuum and have bought a commercial vacuum table - big platen with a hinged frame on top that houses a natural rubber membrane. I use a separate wet lay table and wet out the layers in reverse order and then put them to one side as I work my way down the stack. I then...

colouring resin

Hello everyone My normal lay up means that the last layer before the top sheet is uni CF. I am beginning to use more translucent topsheets that work best with a light substrate therefore having uni CF underneath doesn't bring out the best in them. I need to make the black cf white/light what do you ...

Sleeping - thank you for the tip - I shall change the way I do my lay ups. I had never questioned why, just done as I was advised. Your explanation makes perfect sense.

Going to lay up a pair this morning.

Thanks

Interesting re-reading this thread and comparing it to some of my experiences and what I have been advised: I was told to put the carbon next to the wood in my layups - I never questioned the wisdom but it seems to work fine. I use biax glass and uni CF (250gm)in my normal lay up. I have 2 cores as ...
