Tried PU once and had some issues, so fell back on what I knew, but I agree it's a better sidewall material and keep meaning to try again. I haven't seen any significant stiffness change though, and live in New England so plenty of temp range, nor yellowing (I use a West System white pigment), but t...

And now for something completely different…… Not sure how well this technique would work with plastic sidewalls, but because I “inlay epoxy sidewalls into the core by routering channels into the core blank (leaving a thin bottom to the channels which I plane off after the epoxy hardens), I ...

I use a modified brake tube bender as well, and with further modifications it could keep the edge flat. Haven't quite got around to it though, so I just use a pair of pliers to grip and counter torque the outbound end of the edge with my other hand as I bend the edge with the BTB. Not very elegant, ...

I always thought it was because it's generally the tip & tail sidewalls that take the most abuse and by using a plastic filler, you don't run the risk of moisture seeping into a wood core, freezing and expanding, and then causing a delamination.

Been a very long time since my new math days, but...... Not sure how to show special characters to give the formula for simple beam deflection, but the relevant point is that twice the width doubles the moment of inertia, so half the deflection, or twice as stiff. But thickness is cubed, so twice as...

Somewhere in the forum -- maybe somebody can point to it -- there's a spreadsheet based flex (deflection) calculator. It shows both amount of deflection under a particular load and the deflection profile. The way I've found it most useful is by inputting a ski with the kind of flex I'm looking for t...

Don't know if it was similar stuff, but back in the 70's there was a ski (Graves?...) with a "self-healing" topsheet.

FWIW, my process sounds very similar to yours Falls, including the width of 22oz triax I'm wetting out, so no surprise that our epoxy use is about the same. One difference, it sounds like, is that I'm wetting out the triax outside of the mold and am able to wet out one side, flip the triax over and ...

Hi Falls, I'm assuming the epoxy amounts you use are for a pair of skis, not just for a single ski, right?

Thanks -- it does make sense. Did you try without the overlap and have problems?

Thanks for the beta! I wasn't sure whether to use .080, or .063 and add a layer of fiberglass.

Appreciate the input, and sorry for the delayed response – been skiing & ski making. As for the epoxy amount, I’m using about 1400-1500g for a pair of 181 138/98/123 skis with 2 layers of triax, an extra layer of triax in the tip and tail and a 2” strip of carbon per ski (I also thinly wet out a...

Random questions

A couple questions for y'all.... Is anyone using metal as the base in the tip and tail? I’d like to get away from full wrap edges, but wanted to make the skis look a little more finished. Also, I wonder if having the base at the very tip and tail be a separate piece than the rest of the base would a...

Interesting....I wonder how a translator handles all the puns and word-play in GR, but I can see a twisted sort of irony to a german translation in particular. Anyhow, still working on why rainbow....Melville's deconstruction of the whale? parabolic skis?....:)
