Believe it or not an entire millimeter anywhere on your core makes a lot of difference. I have taken big swings at core thickness before and wasn't happy with the result. I have done this many times with no issues. You just use heatset ink available anywhere, do your screenprint directly on the veneer, and then dry it with a blowdrier. easy.
Epoxy will not smear it. Do your normal layup.

Keeping things clean is a must at all times. I sometimes think that I spend more time doing cleanup than I do building.

I clean the base and tip spacer mat. et.al. with soft bristle brush attachment on my shopvac.
Works pretty well.
