Re: Waxless/traction base material

I had someone contact me last year for a pair of skis with the fish scale p-tex bases. I searched around for pre-cut pattern ptex but came up empty. I was tempted to try it but in the end decided not too and I had to turn the guy down. Good luck.

Re: Poplar - perfect condition

I would use a hard veneer to cover the poplar for binding screw retention. How thick is your veneer? Cutting the poplar so the grain is more vertical will help strengthen the wood core. Actually I did this a long time ago... I used a thick ash veneer about 1.6mm thick on the top and bottom of the po...

Re: core profiling

I haven't been on in a while and saw this post. There's no perfect way to keep the tip or tail from chipping out as you get down to 2mm or less. I've has success with using hot glue along the edge of the wood core, just a few dabs to keep it from lifting up. When you get down to around 4mm take very...

Re: Do edges add to surface area of base?

Your template should be sized with out the edges. So subtract about 4 mm from your desired finally dimensions.

Re: Flaxfiber sidewall/ sidecut

Flax is a thicker material than Fiberglass and does not compress in the same way. So for 2 layers I'd say that looks normal.

Yes entirely flax. Flax is damper than FG.

Re: Park Board Build

You don’t have to use plastic sidewalls. Also rabbeting is not mandatory. But if you do, you want to remove about .8mm deep of wood with a router. Can probably use your template as a guide.

Re: Slalom Skis - First Test Trip

Try sliding the toe and heel backwards to see if you want to move the boot center on the ski. The titanal definitely makes the RC4 damp and heavier. Sounds like a good ski.

Re: Shaper Tool cnc vs. Maker Made cnc

I haven’t used either one, but I’ve been looking at the Shaper for sometime now. For me The Shaper is it. Small and practical for my size shop. Looks easy to use and load designs into.

Re: Flax titanal combo

Sorry just saw your reply... Haven't been on much.

Correct the wood core was not made in the traditional way of glueing up strips of wood. I wanted the ski to be lighter but maintain a firm grip under foot. This allows the tip and tails to flex and engage the turn a little easier. Seems to work.

Here’s a couple of pics of my planer crib. Hope this helps. I’m working on a new version however.

Re: Jonrezz’s Build Log

We’re basically skiing the same areas and we are both carvers. IMHO no need to run the edges all round the tip or tail. I run my edges about half up the tip and tail. No problems with delams. Make sure you pre bend the tips and tails after you attach the edges. This helps prevent the edges from pull...

Re: Jonrezz’s Build Log

That’s a lot of laminates in a short ski. What thickness are you planning for the core? Having 2 layers of titanal, FG and CF will make for a really stiff ski which you’ll want but if the tip area doesn’t bend enough the ski won’t want to release out of the turn. And since the ski is short at 165cm,...
