Another thing I just thought about... I'm not sure about this, but if you're impregnating at essentially room temperature, wouldn't the viscosity of the resin be low enough to flow back out? I guess you could freeze it right away? Yeah on the triax it will be interesting. We'll see how much tension ...

What resin will you be using? Do you know the viscosity at 25C? I think you'll be safe with most the elevated cure systems we use - but I'd build in some kind of drain or something so that if you notice that "glassy" appearance, you can dump it. Best way to control a runaway reaction is to...

Sorry if I sounded obtuse earlier - I do this for a living so all I'm going to be able to do is poke holes/give you some talking points to consider. Sounds like this is already built? I apologize in advance if these seem pointed. This is catalyzed epoxy correct? What temperature will the resin be? A...

DBS - I might be your guy. Send me a PM with what you'd like for all the gear. Can't guarantee the board for a while at my pace though!

Remind me too - was your press the one with adjustable bolts for differing cambers?

I guess I don't know the background/purpose of your project so I can't adequately help. The sketch looks fun.

There are a ton of variables, but just as an example of what a commercially available impregnation equipment consists of:

I agree prepreg is inappropriate for skibuilding, but for only one reason: it's cost prohibitive. There are prepreg epoxy systems designed to cure at low temperatures, and with minimal (e.g. atmospheric) pressures. Prepreg is superior to wet-layup in just about every aspect, except cost. You're also...

Re: HONEYCOMB!

Take some like 10oz. biaxial and wetted it out on a flat plate, then sit your honeycomb core down on top of the wet glass and put a weight on top of the core to seat it into the glass. (Really neato illustration that sums it up better than my wordiness) -WEIGHT- -HONEYCOMB- -WET FIBERGLASS- Let the...

Cost prohibitions aside, PTFE exhibits poor mechanical properties, notably at low temperatures.

Careful when selecting a resin system for the tool - polyesters will dissolve polystyrene. Also, most tooling foams are polyurethane, as they are more dimensionally stable. But if you're looking to get a part or two from the mold, you shouldn't have a problem. Machining that is gonna get messy... Da...

Hmm, agio - do you have a link to the product? If it's what I think it is (Phenolic), I'd be interested in trying that material as sidewall, it's fairly dense, I'd imagine good compressive properties. http://www.ides.com/info/generics/31/Phenolic-Phenolic And to get back on topic (kind of), you shou...

With that, could you not do a simple rule of mixtures to determine the proper fiber areal weight?
