Re: Ski press up for grabs

That's awesome. Sorry for the late reply. Post some pix of the build in the Journals forum.

Ski press up for grabs

Here is an older photo showing the original lower beam. A rockered ski form is in the press, but just the empty tooling without an actual ski. Round knobs are screwed onto the all-thread holding the press forms together, these make for nice handles when moving the forms from the layup area to the sk...

Ski press up for grabs

I will provide current photos eventually, but in the mean time I found a couple older shots to share. The press originally had W6x20 wide flange beams top and bottom. The bottom beam is the important part and deflected too much causing loss of camber in the ski. I replaced that beam with a much stif...

Ski press up for grabs

I need to unload my ski press and forms. This design is suitable for pressing one ski at a time. Steel I-beam press frame: * Frame is 102" long and the legs are 28" with locking swivel casters on all four corners. * Press cavity is 12" tall, 88.5" long, and 8" wide. * The fr...

Re: Location of the boot center using the exact center of the ski

I always considered the ideal mid-boot-sole location to be at the center of the side cut radius, precisely at the narrowest point of the ski. Of course you can always mount forward from this location by whatever distance you want. Running lengths, effective edge lengths, etc. don't matter. If you're...

2021 Journal update

My original photo hosting site crashed and went out of business so the journal had no images for over a year. I just uploaded these pix to Flickr so I could rebuild the journal. I haven't been active with the ski building projects for about five years, I have too many skis! In fact this past summer ...

Re: Ripped up my latest build

What epoxy did you use to build this with? It looks very dry inside. I couldn't pull any of my skis apart like this, can't even peel off the top sheet. I've used QCM and also Resin Research epoxies, never had an issue when skiing.

Re: Skis... with a TWIST!

My early builds had a little twist, maybe 5 mm or so. I just skied on them anyway and don't think it really mattered. I was more interested in learning the craft and empirically deriving my composite recipes and ski shapes. I traced the source of the twist to a wonky lower steel I-beam in my press f...

Re: Bamboo

I have used vertical laminated bamboo flooring as a ski core material for several years. I use 75 inch long x 3.75 inch wide planks (sometimes wider). I remove the tongue and groove features and glue on some poplar to make them wider as needed. Google "vertical bamboo flooring" and see lot...

Brilliant graphic concept!
Terrific job for your first pair.
Nice ski press and a sweet CNC router too, you're "all in" for this hobby.
Keep posting your future ski builds.

My usual composite schedule places unidirectional carbon fiber right against the core top and bottom and I've never had an issue. Some of my skis have over a hundred days on them. But I'm using bamboo for core material and bamboo is not wood.

It's all voodoo anyway.

I like to use this little hand held belt sander for any situation like sanding a little flash off. You can hold this sander on edge pretty easily in one hand. I use it quite a bit and it is more compact and cheaper than a larger tool on a floor stand. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Porter-Cable-371-Se...
